This course provides an overview of key concepts and strategies for field personnel and will aid in preparing for NPGA’s CETP certification. It is an essential tool for ensuring employee safety and continuing success.

Course Objectives

  • Identify vapor distribution system & appliance checks/tests and recognize the steps to perform them.
  • Explain general procedure for placing a vapor distribution system into operation and when to make the final connection to turn on the system.
  • Identify how to validate container, pipe and tubing, regulator, and vapor meter installations.
  • Understand the importance of proper venting, combustion air, and purging.
  • Identify appliance controls and safety devices and understand their purpose.
  • Understand burning propane characteristics (burner components/air adjustments/flame abnormalities.)
  • Understand the importance of communicating customer safety information.

NJPGA Propane Safety Course Restart Plan:

  1. Training for students regarding COVID-19 sanitization and social distancing practices and protocols as a condition for resuming in-person instruction will be provided in the form of dissemination to students of CDC guidance available at
  2. Training for faculty and staff on appropriate sanitization and social distancing practices and protocols will be provided in the form of sharing CDC guidance Institutional policies and procedures have been developed to limit the spread of COVID-19 at the host institution(s). The instructor will be briefed on the institutional policies and procedures, and any steps that are required of him.
  3. Use of face coverings are required for faculty, staff, students, and visitors, except when doing so would inhibit the individual’s health; instructor may offer outdoor breaks where masks can be removed. If multiple people take a break simultaneously, social distancing will be maintained.
  4. Frequent cleaning and sanitization of classroom, restroom, high-touch areas and equipment and shared surfaces are employed; if equipment, including display/demo items, is being handled by students, students will use sanitizing wipes to wipe the item down before passing along to the next participant/returning the item to instructor. Generally, items will be for display only.
  5. Students are encouraged to bring their own masks, and the host site maintains an adequate supply of masks, gloves, and cleaning supplies.
  6. Hand sanitizing stations with 60 percent or more alcohol content are available at all building entry points and throughout the school.
  7. To accommodate students who are unable to participate in in-person instruction, remote learning of CETP course material is available through the Propane Education & Research Council (PERC) Learning Center, accessible at
  8. Health screenings and education regarding self-monitoring for symptoms for faculty, staff, students and visitors will be provided using the attached (or similar) screening tool and handouts.
  9. In order to maintain social distancing in classrooms, class size will be limited so instructor and student workstations are placed 6′ apart from each other;
  10. Staggered break times are used to avoid crowding in the restroom and corridor. Plan is in place to reduce crowding at the entry way, i.e., instructor greets attendees at the parking lot and students keep 6’ distance as they enter the building using a dedicated door directly into the classroom.
  11. We are committed to working with local and State officials, including the local health department and local office of emergency management, to share the components of this restart plan and revise same as may be necessary; and
  12. A log of students, faculty, staff, and visitors is maintained to facilitate contact tracing. NJPGA will cooperate with health department personnel regarding course attendee information. If NJPGA is notified of COVID-19 cases among students or instructors, we will share that information with the local Health Department.
